Fist of the North Star was one of the most popular action comics in Japan in the 1980s, appearing in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1983 to 1988. The scenario is a desolate world after a nuclear war in the 1990s, and Kenshiro, the descendant of an ancient assassination art known as Hokuto Shinken, battles criminals to survive.

Tokyo Ghoul

Tokyo Ghoul is a popular dark fantasy manga that ran on Weekly Young Jump from 2011 to 2014 and was followed by Tokyo Ghoul 2 till 2018. The location is Tokyo, where Ghouls, or supernatural beings, coexist with humans. They have the appearance of a normal person, yet they eat human flesh. Its anime adaptation is likewise well-received by fans throughout the world.

Hiro Mashima

Hiro Mashima, the renowned manga writer who is also recognized for another of his masterpieces, Fairy Tail, wrote 35 volumes of Rave Master (Rave). Rave Master was published in Weekly Shonen Magazine from 1999 to 2005. Haru Glory, the main character in the fantasy adventure manga, is on a quest to find the five parts of the precious stone Rave.


Since its publication in 1998-1999, Uzumaki, which comprises three volumes of manga, has been famous among not only Japanese but also foreign followers. Uzumaki, which means spirals in Japanese, is the topic of the horror manga. The main heroine Kirie Goshima and her boyfriend Shuichi Saito endure unusual supernatural happenings in the mythical cursed village of Kurouzu-cho.

Yu Yu Hakusho

In the 1990s, Yu Yu Hakusho was one of the most popular adventure manga in the Weekly Shonen Jump comic books. Yusuke Urameshi, the main character, is killed in a vehicle accident and resurrects after a difficult period. As an Underworld Detective, he investigates otherworldly happenings with other peculiar characters such as Kurama, Goki, and Hiei.


Since 1989, Young Animal has been publishing Berserk, a dark fantasy continuing manga. The plot follows the adventure of the main character Guts, who utilizes his huge sword to survive the world in a hypothetical medieval Europe. Berserk has also been adapted into anime and video games. Unfortunately, manga creator Kentaro Miura died in May 2021, before the completion of Berserk.
